This is a copy of an announcement just made on /r/darkenlightenment.

Some of you may have noticed that the discord chat server for this sub was removed a few days ago. I apologize for the lack of communication about this. The short of it is, discord isn’t really a platform that can be trusted. They can and will remove servers for political reasons. In addition, there was some specific bizarre behavior in the app for me a few days ago which prompted me to decide it was time to pack up and leave for a platform which allows greater control of the generated data, and greater difficulty with a third party arbitrarily deciding to delete a channel/room.
I did a bit of research on the available options, and I think riot.im is likely the best choice.
Some pros about this:
- It can be accessed through a browser, through a desktop app, and a mobile app
- It supposedly can be linked to and be used to view other services like discord and slack in addition to its own rooms so you can view all similar things through a single app. Though I haven’t actually tried this. That is the claim.
- I don’t believe it is possible for moderators or even me to delete a room (the only option is to leave a room), so conversations and data shouldn’t be lost as long as you stay in the room. Even if you leave the room, a copy of the history of that room while you were there is still accessible for you.
- You can encrypt the rooms so that eavesdropping is less easy.
I don’t think I will encrypt the main rooms of the community as I consider that to be public, however it is very easy for individual users to create encrypted private rooms for side chats if they so desire it. Something you can’t do in slack or discord I don’t think.
Keep in mind, encrypting the room in all likelihood is not a complete protection of your data. The vault 7 leaks indicated that malware was created by the CIA which can infect devices like smartphones and grab the data prior to its encryption. And of course, the CIA lost control of that code so pretty much anyone with the know-how can use it to have the full access to the entirety of the CIA’s cyber-spying capability. That is a real facepalm.
The only con I have seen so far is that it isn’t as streamlined as discord or slack. Still, I think that is a tolerable sacrifice given the listed pros above.
I am still getting used to this service myself, so there may be some changes in the rules and setup as I become more familiar with it.
Again, I encourage you to join this replacement platform if you were using the previous discord. And if you are mad that I deleted the discord server, then you should be happy since by moving to this platform that should not be possible for me or anyone else to do again. Unless there is a way to do it I haven’t discovered yet. I would especially welcome users who have previous experience to give suggestions and advice on how to make it operate as smoothly as possible.

Note that I do not have any involvement with the rooms shown in the graphic. Though feel to join them if you are a refugee from the million dollar extreme sub. The same should work for the DE rooms as well.
Edit: I have been informed that some people are having trouble joining. Below are direct links to each room. At the top of the room is a link to the community as a whole which should give links to all rooms currently created for this community. If you experience problems, please let me know so I can try to find a solution. I may not know about the problem unless you tell me. Edit3: Another way to join is to first sign up generally at riot.im. Once logged in, you can use the room alias from within riot to join the rooms.
